  Mardi Gras Krewe

1957 – Richard Sails the Mystic Seas

A figure of imposing regality, Richard Coeur de Lion V is robed in a costume of glistening gold, silver and white. His tunic is of cream satin with gold metallic stripes and features a bib of rhinestones bordered with gold and jewels and a wide belt luxuriously encrusted with semi-precious jewels of various hues. His trousers match his tunic and are caught in high, white boots. The long mantle, which falls majestically from King Richard’s shoulders to the floor, is of white antique velvet bordered in ermine and ornamented with jewels of dazzling brilliance. A cross of sparkling diamonds on the back of the mantle bespeaks his everlasting allegiance to the Church. The cross sends its rays of silver out to the edges of the mantle and blazes with semi-precious jewels. King Richard wears mitts of gold and carries a jeweled dagger as well as a jeweled scepter – the symbol of his office.

As lovely as any mythical princess, Queen Berengaria V is attired in robes of glistening white. Her gown of white satin is moulded with a deep sweetheart neckline defined by a bertha collar, luxuriously embroidered in intricate designs of silver and edged with bugle bead fringe. The full skirt boasts a front panel blazing with replicas of bows and plumes done in silver. The radiant patterns of rhinestone medallions and silver bugle bead fringe flash in glorious splendor. The majestic mantle of white antique velvet falls from her lovely shoulders in scintillating patterns as it sweeps to the floor. An enormous Bible of gold with writing inscribed in it and topped by a gigantic chalice of blinding brilliance rises from the center of the mantle. Diamond rays burst from the edges of the chalice in flashing arcs. The delicate collar of the mantle forms a frame for her lovely face. The collar is heavily woven with rhinestones and bugle beads. The mantle is edged in iridescent sequin cloth in which nestle crosses of topaz and turquoise stones. Long white kid gloves, white satin slippers, diamond earrings and bracelet complement the regal robes. The costume is made complete by the dazzling crown and scepter wrought of silver and diamonds.
