  Mardi Gras Krewe

1958 – Spanish Holiday

Bringing back to living reality the days when knights were bold and their kings all powerful and secure in their majesty, Donald Glaser portrays the gracious sovereign, King Richard Coeur de Lion VI. A figure of imposing regality, King Richard is robed in a costume of midnight black, silver and gold. His long tunic is of gold and silver coin-dotted satin brocade featuring a magnificently embroidered gold and silver leaf design in front. A wide, black velvet belt is luxuriously encrusted with gold and silver and fastened with a wide gold buckle. His mandarin collar sparkles with dazzling silver designs. His trousers match his tunic and are caught in gold boots. The long mantle, which falls majestically from King Richard’s shoulders to the floor, is of black broadtail edged with designs worked in gold and silver. On the back of the mantle, the Troubadour crest blazes with semi-precious jewels of green, gold and purple hue. He wears gold mesh mitts and carries a jeweled dagger and also a jeweled scepter – symbol of his stewardship.

In a wondrous gown that would delight the heart of any fairytale princess, Miss Susan Phillips reigns as Queen Berengaria VI. The Queen steps from the pages of history to delight and captivate with her grace, beauty and dignity. Queen Berengaria is robed in a magnificent gown of gold-threaded, white satin brocade. The bodice is moulded with a romantically deep off-the-shoulder neckline and features an empire waistline. The neckline is enhanced by puffed sleeves caught up on the sides by bands of glittering rhinestones. The neckline is also edged with the brilliant stones. The bell-shaped skirt is caught up in pouffs and falls into gold-embroidered lace flounces at the bottom. The ornate design of the skirt is matched by the rich effect lent by satin panels inscribed with graceful designs of aurora borealis. The panels are placed at intervals around the skirt and continue from the waistline to the beginning of the flounces outlining the bell shape. Her majestic mantle of white cut velvet is lined with gold lame and edged with a double band of white feathers centered by rich gold braid. A sunburst design at the top of the mantle gives forth scintillating rays. An enormous crest of the Spanish House of Navarre rises from the center of the mantle. The crest blazes with semi-precious jewels of various hues. Rubies, emeralds and tawny topaz shine from designs around the edge of the mantle. The Queen wears a crown of gold set with diamonds, and carries a gold and diamond scepter. Long white, kid gloves, white satin slippers, diamond and pearl earrings, and diamond bracelet complement the regal robe.
