2003 – Richard’s Harlequin Masquerade

Our monarch Richard is found in the Great Hall of his castle amidst all the regalia and trappings of state. He reflects upon the many fables and fantasies surrounding the historic symbols of his kingdom and his reign. He examines the Great Seal of England, emblazed with the three Lions of Richard. He recalls the fable of the illusive Unicorns and the legend of the Lady of the Lake from the days of King Arthur and the knights of the round table. He looks upon the Plantagenet Rose, emblem of his family heritage, and the Imperial Crown of State, symbol of his power as King of England.

Delighted by these reflections, Richard calls upon his court jester and commands that he plan a gala and lavish masquerade ball to bring life and substance to all these memories. Richard further decrees that preparations be immediately begun for a Bal Masque to celebrate his reign and in honor of his beloved queen, Berengaria. Having heard the king’s command, the loyal jester bows deeply and taking leave of his monarch, immediately sets about creating an appropriate venue for impending royal festivities.
